Operationalizing precision conservation: Aligning best management practice prioritization with local needs in agricultural watersheds
Researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, developed a field-specific BMP prioritization framework that builds on the ACPF’s opportunity mapping by ranking best management practices (BMPs) for individual fields instead of just identifying broad conservation zones. This framework was tested on 627 fields in southern Ontario’s Medway Creek watershed. It integrates hydrogeomorphic clustering, a ‘Composite BMP Need Score,’ feasibility constraints, and stakeholder-adjustable weights to generate ranked BMP suggestions. Controlled drainage was identified as the top practice for 202 fields, followed by grassed waterways, water and sediment control basins, wetlands, and riparian buffers. Sensitivity and field consistency analyses demonstrated that stakeholder input helped refine rankings without compromising biophysical suitability. Overall, the tool serves as decision-support guidance, needing further validation, engineering design, and landowner input prior to implementation.
